The Wig Regimen for Longer and Stronger Hair PDF E-mail
Written by Diedre Callam

Many say it’s impossible. Some say you have to be biracial or a mixed chick in order to do it. Nevertheless, many women of African decent have dreams of growing their natural hair to great lengths.

I admit - I too have the desire to see my hair grow as long as possible. I’m more concerned with healthy hair but long and healthy is not a bad deal either. After my Big Chop, my quest for long healthy hair led me to the “Wig Regimen”.

When hair is not being combed often, you experience less breakage from combing and hence are able to retain length. The idea behind the regimen is that when hair is left unmanipulated under a wig for extended periods of time, it has the chance to grow. During this period it is important to maintain your hair’s health through various methods of conditioning your hair.

I used the wig regimen for a few months and although I got tired of wearing a wig and wanted to unleash my natural hair, I experien twice the growth I had at any period during my natural hair journey.

Simple Rules of the Wig Regimen

  1. The best hairstyle to wear under your wig is semi-loose cornrows.
  2. Never do your cornrows so tight that you feel excessive pressure along your hairline.
  3. Deep condition your hair once a week.
  4. Always wear a protective wig liner.
  5. I recommend wearing a ¾ wig that will reduce the stress on your hairline and covering the hairline with a scarf or headband.
  6. Remove your wig immediately when home. That allows your scalp to breathe as much as possible.
  7. Never apply a wig when your scalp is moist or wet scalp. That may cause premature scalp fungus.
  8. Clip your hair ends every three to six months.
  9. Tie your hair with a rayon or silk scarf nightly.
  10. Maintain a healthy diet.

The Wig Regimen is an inexpensive way to do protective styling that could have you growing your natural hair faster than ever thought possible.

When I did the big chop in 2004, I used wigs for about six months and my hair did grow a lot. I am going to use the wig regimen again, I am going to a wig shop this weekend to find 2 wigs that I can wear over the next couple of months. ;)

Ok it has been almost 3 months to the day. I have been doing the wig regimen and it is going great my hair is growing and is very healthy, I only have the wigs on when I am at work any other time I wear my natural hair so that my hair will have the chance to breath, and so I can play in my hair I love the way my natural hair feels.
