If you are looking for a way to start your locks that can be handled a little more at the beginning you may want to consider starting your locks with two strand or double strand twists. Locks started with double strand twist are a lot more durable than locks started with coils, finger coils/roll, or palm rolls. This method will work on coily, curly and wavy hair types and hair that is at least two inches long. Washing ThemIf your hair is coily or curly, you should have no problem with locks coming undone in the wash, if some do come undone just re-twist them. If your hair is wavy you may find that more that a few of your locks come undone when you wash them. There are things that you can do to prevent this. MaintenanceLocks started with twist are usually maintained by twisting or palm rolling. ProsYou can easily start twist in your own hair at home. If you want help, most natural hair salons can start your double twists for you. Many offer twisting and palm rolling lock maintenance. If you get your locks started in a salon it is usually inexpensive depending on your hair’s length. You don’t have to worry to much when you wash your hair. ConsThe portion of your lock that is twisted may start to look like the rest of the lock but some times it continues to look like a twist.
If you want a uniform look to your lock you may have to cut the twisted part off.
If you get hand-in-your-head-itis (always twisting your locks) you can weaken your bases and cause your locks to thin. It is very tempting to always have your hand in your head. To keep the roots and bases of your locks looking neat you will need to finger twist them after washing. How To Start Locks with Double Twists
1. Start out with clean freshly washed hair. 2. Start in the back of your head. 3. Section off a piece of hair of hair. 4. Put a little gel on the piece of hair. 5. Divide the piece in two parts wrap on part around the other until you get to the end. You can twirl the end around your finger to make a coil/curl. 6. Repeat over entire head.
