And now a little bit about my hair journey. My hair was natural until I was eleven years old when my mother decided that the solution to my hair breakage was to give me a relaxer. It made me feel good to have straight hair because being in junior high school meant that you needed to be like everyone else to survive. Over the years my hair went through its ups and downs; long styles and short cuts; healthy tresses to bald spots and split ends. After going through so much to have "good hair" I realized that the straightening of ethnic hair is done not only to change our appearance but to change how we view ourselves in society and to align ourselves with our straight-haired counterparts. I'm not saying that every woman of color should stop relaxing their hair and wear "Black Power" t-shirts; I just believe that it is important for you to take a step back and think before you put harsh chemicals in your hair. Ask yourself why you are doing this and see if you can come up with five GOOD reasons (not one like "My boyfriend likes straight hair"). The last thing that I would like to share with you about myself is that I am a thinker, lover, fighter, talker, and chronic texter (lol). I believe in God but I don't push my religion on others. A little bit about me huh? Well where do I begin? I am a fun, loving, free-spirited African-American woman who wears her heart on her sleeve. I was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY where I still reside. The city continuously teaches me new lessons everyday, about myself and the world around me.
